Most projects will take me a week or so to get back to you, although a quicker turn-around time is possible. I also perform services such as audio noise reduction and video editing. With one recent client, I took a “secret recording” made with a hidden recorder and was able to remove most of the background noise to make it audible. After completing my work, a court stenographer was able to transcribe the conversation easily. The finished transcription was a key piece of evidence in a civil lawsuit in Federal District Court.
Another project involved converting old (20+ years) sermon tapes to MP3. There was lots of tape hiss, and most of the high frequencies had already dropped out because of the age of the tape (read more about this phenomenon below). I was able to minimize the hiss and significantly maximize the intelligibility. Was it worth the work? The owner of these tapes was thrilled to have them converted to MP3. They no longer owned a tape player, and these particular tapes were special to my client. If you ask them, they would say “YES!”
Something you may not know: cassettes and VHS tapes are made of acetate, which definitely has a shelf life. After some period of time, magnetic particles embedded in the acetate tape begin to lose their strength. Once that happens, audio dropouts and noise begin to appear and the program material begins to disappear permanently. No amount of processing or digital magic will bring it back once it’s gone.
